In today’s world, where people are constantly glued to computers, smartphones and other electronic devices, digital eyestrain is quite common. Amblyopia occurs when one eye doesn’t develop correctly. It’s commonly called lazy eye because one eye is inclined to move “lazily” while the other eye is stationary. When detected in infants and children, treatment should be started right away. Eyeglasses, eye patches and contact lenses play significant roles in the care process. 

Colorblindness is when you’re unable to distinguish between colors—usually greens and reds. It’s because your eyes’ cone cells don’t work or are missing. Most cases are inherited, but certain drugs and diseases later in life can incite it. Men are much more prone to the genetic version than women, and there’s no cure. But special eyeglasses and contact lenses can help distinguish between certain colors. (The severity of colorblindness in which colors are seen only in tones of gray is quite rare.) 

Cataracts are overcast areas in the lenses of eyes that don’t allow light to clearly pass through to the retina, where images are processed. Simple situations can produce cataract glare: driving at night or gazing at a flat, sun-drenched surface, such as a beach. Sunglasses (prescription and non-prescription) with polarized lenses are terrific at combating glare from oncoming headlights and the sun. An optometrist will help you choose the best degrees of polarization and shapes of frames.
